Apple iPhone 12: Specs, Price, & Release Date In Australia

Published on 14th October 2020 byGARRY LU

Early this morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 – four iterations of it, to be exact – boasting of faster 5G connectivity, enhanced durability, enhanced display, all-new colour options, not to mention, a sleeker physical design. Suffice it to say, there’s a decent amount to be excited about.

Key Features / Highlights

Among the upgrades this time around, fans of the flagship can expect to enjoy a more streamlined and more efficient device from the top down. Here’s what has been revealed so far.

Form

On the physical aspect of things, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 has a flat-edged design that’s 11% thinner, 15% smaller, and 16% lighter than its predecessor. It’ll also have 4x better drop performance with the introduction of a “ceramic shield” glass cover – meaning fumbling on a night out won’t necessarily result in a crack.

Performance

Under the hood, in addition to Apple’s promise to deliver a world-class integrated 5G experience across hardware and software, the iPhone 12 will be powered by the in-house 6-core A14 Bionic chip; which holds the fastest CPU and GPU by up to 50% in comparison to the fastest competing smartphone chips in the market. Effectively, this means 80% more performance, greater battery life, and just more technical grunt in general. RAM has not yet been specified, nor has battery capacity – but we do know it’ll be wireless charging enabled with MagSafe magnetic technology. The iPhone 12 will, of course, run on iOS14 which you can read all about here

Display

The display is simply gorgeous. Super Retina XDR with a 2,532 x 1,170 resolution, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, up to 1,200 nits of brightness (accompanied by Dolby Vision and HDR10 support). Translation: more vivid colours, more accurate colours, sharper imagery and text – a visual experience that’s tough to rival.

Camera

The iPhone 12 has a dual-lens rear camera system with 12-megapixel Ultra-Wide (f/2.4) + Wide (f/1.6) lenses at the centrepiece, as well as a 7-element lens which reportedly delivers a 27% better low-light capture. Night Mode is now available on both the Ultra-Wide and Front-Facing camera (also 12-megapixel); autofocus is faster than ever before; 4K video recording makes a return. In short, if you even remotely liked the iPhone 11 camera, you’ll love the iPhone 12 camera.

Colourways

As for the matter of colourways, there’s a fresh batch of options: Blue, Green, Red, White, and Black. iPhone Pro models will come in “Pacific Blue”, Silver, Gold, and Graphite.

iPhone 12 Mini

The iPhone 12 Mini has the exact same features as the base iPhone 12 – only it’s (obviously) smaller. Apple claims it’s the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G smartphone device in the world – “re-architected to pack all the technology of iPhone 12 into a delightfully compact size, while still delivering an impressively large and immersive edge-to-edge display” at just 5.4-inches. On the other end of the spectrum, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will measure up to 6.7-inches.
